why go through all the work to keep it natural when u can just weave it?

To have someone do your own hair is easier, but it’s not cheap. You have to buy the weave, which can be 70+ dollars, and then have someone put it in and those prices vary. Weaves can also lead to your hair not being able to “breath” or get moisture. That can result in breakage depending on how often you get it and how long you leave it in, and it can also take your hair and your hairline out. That’s why I never really wore weaves.

But that’s one reason. Now for my own personal reason, and I’m sure there will be some who agree and some who have different reasons, but natural is better. Why weave it when you can grow your natural hair to any desired length? Of course it takes time and effort, but what doesn’t? Natural products are more expensive than products with harmful ingredients, but aren’t organic foods more expensive than regular foods? When trying to live a healthy lifestyle, doesn’t that require a lot of work? Finding the right foods to eat, working out 3-5 days a week.

Not only that, but there’s nothing like having your hair out and being able to say it’s yours, it’s healthy, and it can be long without wearing a weave.

And to be honest, for me, it was only hard in the beginning with trying to figure out what worked best for me. Now it’s as easy as applying a leave-in and leaving. I trim when I find split-ends, and deep condition every week. But anyone who has hair should do that to keep it healthy, whether it’s natural, relaxed, or straightened.

What are parabens and why are they harmful to natural hair ?

Parabens aren’t good for any type of hair:

Parabens are potent chemicals used to preserve beauty products. Methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben are the most commonly used parabens. Less common parabens include isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben and benzylparaben. Studies have shown that parabens mimic the female hormone, estrogen. They have been scientifically linked to the development of several forms of breast cancer. Other studies have shown that certain parabens adversely affect the secretion of testosterone and the function of the male reproductive system. Why would a manufacturer use such a potentially dangerous ingredient? Parabens are extremely inexpensive and they extend the shelf life of any given product for as long as 2 years, if not longer.

Without some sort of preservation system, you would have to store all of your beauty products in the refrigerator and even then, they would not last for very long. Larger companies that sell their products in retail shops, drug stores and supermarkets must use very strong preservatives, because their products often sit in a store room or on a shelf for extended periods of time.”

hey, i just came across your blog and i must say is very helpful and useful. I just started transitioning to natural from relaxed. is there any tips you can give me about what to do to my hair. I'll be braiding it through out the process, is it safe to wash my hair when is braided? and i tend to get flaks and dandruff do you have any suggestions or any oil to use to keep my scalp healthy through out the process? Thank you

It depends what kind of braids you are getting. If you get plaits, you can wash your hair, you just have to be careful because it can make your hair style look old. But, you can use Witch Hazel instead to cleanse your scalp or Tea Tree oil for cleansing and this oil is also good to fight dandruff and promotes a healthy scalp.

What can I do for my natural hair at nights before I go to bed? I heard that wrapping natural hair makes it knot up

You can use a silk or satin bonnet, or if you don’t want to sleep with anything on your head, you can buy a silk/satin pillow case.

also, I've been taking Biotin for hair growth and depending on the brand it has been effective. do you have any suggestions as to other supplements that increase or speed up hair growth?

No, I don’t use supplements. I have tried the biotin but it seemed the same to me so I stopped using it; not only that, too much pill consumption can have a long term effect on your body. So this is why I try to get nutrients from foods. Nutritional foods that aide in hair growth are Chicken, Eggs, Salmon, Kidney Beans, Almonds, ( or cashews, pecans etc.) Carrots, Spinach, Skim Milk.

These are things I eat regularly, and you might too and not know it.

I hope this helps !

love your blog. in need of advice: my hair is relaxed and I get a wash and set every two weeks or so. I would like to stop getting relaxers but I still want to maintain my hair with blow outs every once and a while. how would it help/hinder going from relaxed to "natural"? if that makes sense lol

Thank you sweets! Now, depending on your hair texture, getting blow-out can still alter your natural hair state. If your natural hair is curly, it will make the curl pattern much looser and even leave some straight to where it looks “lifeless.” If it’s more kinky, it can also do the same. Basically, you can still have that heat damage depending on how often you do the blow-outs.

There are some whose hair can tolerate a lot of heat, and some who can’t (my hair can’t for example).

I hope this helps!

Hi, I really need help! I wear my hair natural most of the time and end up always pulling it into a bun. It gets really annoying and I just want something new. I've tried braid outs, twist outs, and bantu knot outs and I don't know what to do anymore!! Some of the pictures that you post I really like, mostly ones with the tighter or kinkier curls. If you could help me out that would be great!

Hey ! The best way I feel to find a new hair style is to play around with you hair or try youtube. You can type in “natural hairstyles” and so many things will come up! That’s how I started when I didn’t know what to do with my hair.

Here are some examples:

but it all depends on your preference and what you want to rock!

Im a transitioner Im having the HARDEST time trying to slick my edges down. Do you have any suggestions?

You can try Eco-Styler gel, it doesn’t dry your hair out. They also have one that comes with Argan Oil as an ingredient and one with Olive Oil.

I am trying to transition from relaxers to natural again and I'm having a hard time finding something to do with my hair .. What products should I use and styles should I try ?? Help please :( Becoming discouraged.

Twist-outs and braid-outs are great for transitioners

here’s a great twist-out tutorial:

As far as products, that will have to be the trail and error process depending on your hair type. But use natural hair products with no silicone so that you don’t have product build up and natural oils to seal that moisture in (Argan Oil, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil)
